About Last Night….
No. 7 Miami opened the season Friday night by doing what Miami does when the opponent is supposed to be easy: they ran up the score on Stanford and then acted like they’d just won a national title. Final: Miami 45, Stanford 6.
The Hurricanes flew across the country, found a Cardinal team picked last in the ACC, and treated Stanford Stadium like a practice field. New QB Darian Mensah (the Duke transfer making his Miami debut) went 27-of-30 for 401 yards and five touchdowns. Malachi Toney caught 12 balls for a school-record 234 yards and three scores, breaking Eddie Brown’s 42-year-old mark from the Hail Flutie game. Toney even hit the Heisman pose after his TDs, because of course he did. Against Stanford.
The scoring was basically a highlight reel of Miami doing Miami things:
• Toney 23-yard TD on the first drive
• Toney 2-yard TD
• CharMar Brown 5-yard run
• Daylyn Upshaw 5-yard TD
• Cooper Barkate 34-yard TD
• Toney 47-yard TD that set the record
• A late field goal to make it 45-6 so they could keep the backups in
Stanford managed two field goals and otherwise spent the night watching Toney run past them. Miami piled up 549 yards. The Cardinal had 299 and zero touchdowns.
From an FSU fan’s perspective: congratulations, you beat a team that just lost to Hawaii the week before and was never going to hang with you. Padding stats and striking Heisman poses against a last-place ACC squad is peak “The U” energy. We’ll see how cute those poses look when they actually play somebody.
